How to Hang and Style Curtains Like a Designer

Curtains and window treatments make a DRAMATIC impact to any space, that is why it is so important to get it right. These are 5 designer tips to consider next time you’re purchasing or installing your window treatments.

1. The placement of your rod MATTERS!

Your curtain rod shouldn’t be installed exactly to the size of your window frame, but slightly wider and higher. When you install your curtain rod the same height and width of you window frame it makes your window and room appear smaller and darker. Try installing the rod higher AND wider than your actual window frame to add more light to your space and create an illusion of a larger window. A good standard is to install the rod 2/3 between the top of the window frame and the ceiling.

(Don’t forget to install it wider -often people make the mistake of only installing it higher and this creates an awkward skinny shape)

2. Let the light in!

I love a loose weave curtain panel that lets the light shine through. It creates an airy and ethereal feel to any space. If your room needs practical darkening (like a bedroom or TV room) layer sheer curtains with blackout curtains or blinds to balance practical with an airy feel.

(My personal favourite curtain material is linen or a linen-blend!)

3. Curtains need accessories too!

I say it all the time, but it’s really the details that matter. Add interest to your curtains by adding curtain rings, fun finials, tie-backs, or by switching up the style of rod.

(Try out a french curtain rod!)

4. Add more panels!

If custom window treatments aren’t in the budget, try adding more panels. For a luxurious look, double (or triple!) the amount of standard curtain panels per window. This makes your windows look more full even when they’re closed and leaves you with professional results.

5. NO floating curtains!

Finally, a basic standard is NO floating curtains (and I’m not talking about cafe curtains-which I love!). Your panels should either lightly graze the floor or sit a few centimeters above the floor for a tailored look. For a more romantic or dramatic style, try puddling your curtains —just don’t overdo it!

Of course there are exceptions to this standard depending on the space, but this is a great rule of thumb.

Hope these tips help for your next window treatment purchase/installation —or encourage you to adjust your current ones! Feel free to reach out with any design questions you may have, I’m always here to help.
